About ICOM

ICOM was founded in 1946.

ICOM is an international organization of museums and museum professionals working for the research, conservation, development and public awareness of the natural and cultural, tangible and intangible heritage of humanity.

ICOM is the only global membership-based network in the world, uniting 45,493 members from more than 138 countries, 119 National Committees and 32 International Committees.

ICOM establishes professional and ethical standards for museum activities, develops recommendations on issues related to cultural heritage, promotes capacity building and improves knowledge.


ICOM Strategic Plan 2022 – 2028

The ICOM 2022-28 Strategic Plan was approved by the 37th General Assembly, in the framework of the ICOM General Conference in Prague on 24 August 2022. The plan was developed by the Standing Committee on the Strategic Plan, following a participatory process involving ICOM members, the Advisory Board, the Executive Board and the Secretariat.

ICOM Statutes

The Statutes of the International Council of Museums are the basic document of the organization. The Internal Rules of ICOM and the ICOM Code of Ethics for Museums define and complement these Statutes.
